John Andrewpoints out that Brenda would non have seen Thunderclap for four days,this is sweet as he misses the point that she has not seen her own sonfor four days either It shows how attached little John Andrew is tohis horse, as if he were in his mothers shoes he would not bedesperate to get back to his mother but to his horse. We know thatBrenda and Tony do not play a big part in Johns life, he has a nannyand is close to the stable boy, and sees him as a role model.It is cle ar to see that Tony had been suffering with from lonelinessand missing Brenda by his reply to the stationmaster, Ive beenexpecting her every day. Waugh remains very compassionatein his attitude to the faithless Brenda and allows no call attention of anger inTony, which would have been well-justified, he just says no harm donethen.Also, this passage has a great range of ironic implication and it isin parts exceptionally funny the irony of Tony reacting to Brendasconfession of carrying on madly with young men by inferring thatbuying a Pekingese would have been far worsened is pure farce.
